Jingles Played on the Radio

For this part of my blog I am going to be analysing different types of jingles from various radio stations. Jingles can be used to introduce the news, weather, sports and just general talk on the radio. The jingle promotes the person speaking or what is about to happen next, this keeps the audience up to date therefore making them able to understand what is happening:

Radio news jingle:

  • This is more of a serious and dramatic tone
  • It is played in the background of the presenter reporting the news
  • It includes other ways of listening to the news and the name of the radio show
  • The jingle represents what is about to happen and keeps us updated
Weather jingle:
  • It usually includes a mention of a product it is sponsored by e.g. 'weather sponsored by kleenex balsam tissues'
  • In some stations they use the same jingle as the news
  • Radio shows like BBC change the theme to a slightly more upbeat tune
Sports jingle:
  • We can hear the audience in the background giving the feel of a stadium, this instantly relates the audience to sports
  • The voice over is deep and engaging
  • It is dramatic, but upbeat at the same time

Traffic news jingles:
  • Traffic is usually played during rush hour, this could be the morning or evening
  • The news station is repeated during the announcement of traffic
  • Sometimes they do not call it a 'traffic announcement' they change the phrase to something more dramatic for example on capital it is called a 'travel update'
  • Dramatic music is played in the background of the announcement and then fades into the next song playing in the background towards the end
Radio jingle:
  • The music is catchy and memorable
  • The name of the radio show is included and in some cases the frequency
  • Also the location of the radio show
  • If the radio is promoting products or is sponsored by a product then they mention it
  • Some stations include information like more ways the news can be listened to for example 'on radio, online or on your mobile phone... this is capital'
