I have learn't many different sort of media technologies that I had not ever been familiar with in the past. These are Blogger, this is where i posted new information that I had explored for my different media texts and explained how and why I decided to make decisions that i did. I also used sound cloud to import music and sound effects that I had used in my radio show. By importing them onto sound cloud means that I could post them onto my blog.
The software and technology that I used to record the voices for my radio, were things like the micro phone, since the room i recorded in was not sound proofed I had to have the people recording stand closer to the microphone so that no echoes were picked up. On the other hand because the micro phone picks up breaths much louder than if they were standing further away meant that I had to spend more time silencing the voices. Compression is when the whole radio is made to the same volume so that when it is played in the car people do not have to constantly turn the radio up to the appropriate volume. Adobe audition 1.5 is the software that I used to record and edit the radio show.

Evaluation- Institution
My radio show Razzle Radio, is a local radio show. It represents Radlett in Hertfordshire. The news stories I created related to the stories happening in the local community, or represented stories from the members of the public.
My show would be more like a Local radio show, for example LBC or Capital Birmingham, these are both local radio stations and broadcast to local communities. LBC is owned by Global Radio. This is a British media company formed in 2007. It owns other many large radio stations such as Capital, Capital Xtra, Heart and Smooth. These Broadcast mainly from London although Global Radio own other stations in different regions.
Local or Community radio, serve geographical communities they broadcast content that is relevant to the local, specific audience. Community radio are operated, owned and influenced by the communities they serve. They are non profit and provide the community with a opportunity to share their own experiences in the media. My radio best suits this genre of radio as members of the public have the ability share their views and thoughts on changes that are occurring in the community and how it effects their everyday life. There is a certain personal feel that comes with local radio.

Evaluation- Representation
The advantages that i gained from listening to multiple different radio shows means that I really understood the language, tone and ways the presenters speak. This enabled me to present and portray my radio show as if it was a real life radio show. This could also depend on the target audience, for example a show targeting a younger audience may speak in a less formal way and uses colloquial language that appeals to younger audience, this could be the slang that are used now days e.g. mate, dude, babes.
In my first attempt of writing a script in my preliminary task, I had not done as much extensive research into radio in comparison to what i have done now. My knowledge is far wider now, I have learnt that the ways in which radio is presented is dependent upon to audience it targets. I had to find people to record the voices for the characters on my radio. The people that i used had to represent the age and personality of the voices on my radio.
For my presenters I wanted a female voice, this is because the radio show that i was doing targets middle aged women, therefore by using a female voice makes the radio show more approachable and appeals to the target audience. I used a male voice for the news presenter, in my opinion a male voice sounds more dramatic this is the way the news is presented.
Voices for advert 1:
For my first advert I needed to use a female voice to play the wife and a male voice to play the husband. I used a drama teacher at my college to play the mother (Louise), she has a motherly voice this is relatable for the audience as she sounds like a mother. The father was played by an art teacher (Chris), for this role i needed the father to sound forgetful yet kind at the same time. A father turkey i used Jon, a media teacher at my college, he is very good at changing his voice to sound like the characters that i needed. Father Turkey is a comical voice and i needed someone confident to play it. Christine was the voiceover at the end of the advert.
I had the choice between two voices to play the mother. I chose to use Louise as she sounded louder and clearer voices for advert 2:
Graham a science teacher played the man in the car advert, his voice sounds dramatic which is what i needed for the advert. Alex played the voiceover at the end of the advert, i needed someone who could change the sound of their voice. The harsh tone of the voice alerts the listeners and makes it feel more tense. The sound effects that i used allowed the advert to sound more realistic
News story 1 voices:
For the fan 1 in this story I used one of my friends Tali, for these characters i needed people who sounded young, due to the death of a singer who's audience is teenage girls, using my friends creates an authentic and realistic feel. For the second fan I recorded it myself as I felt i suited the voice. Chris again played the voice of the rehab group leader, he sounds kind and his voice is calm, this is how i would imagine a rehab leader to sound.
News story 2 voices:
The first voice I used was Christine, she played the mother and complains about the noise of the machines, she sounds upset and aggravated. Christine plays the older lady, since she is a drama teacher she has learnt to change her voice to sound like her characters this is one of the main reasons i used her. Jodie another friend of mine plays a student voice in the story.
News story 3 voices:
Tali played the voice of the mother over the phone
News story 4 voices:
For the Dr I used Louise as her voice sounded authoritative and intellectual
Presenters voices:
For the presenter voices I played the main presenter Jackie Donnague, Jon played the news presenter and Alex did the jingles.
When editing the radio show, taking out the breaths, controlling the timing between sentences and taking out the mistakes means that the performance of the voices can be controlled according to the context of the situation that is happening e.g. an advert or news.

Evaluation- Using the Conventions of Real Media for my Media Product- News
Before deciding on which news story I would include on my radio show I did extensive research in order to execute the news bulletin effectively. From the research that I found that all news story consist of the 5W's and news values. These are key conventions that I had to include in my radio to make it sound as realistic as possible. These conventions structure the story and enable listeners to be informed of the correct information.
I listened to a number of different news stories to identify and compare what stories they included on their shows, i also compared different radio shows to see if their news stories changes depending on their audience and genre. Also by listening to different news bulletins I got a good understanding of how the news sounds authentic through the use of language that they use.
I listened to the similarities and differences of news bulletins used on local and national radio. By doing this I could identify what to include and not include in my radio show.
There are other parts of radio that are vital when creating a radio show, these are: voxpops, outside broadcasts, archive clips, soundbites and specialist reporters- these generally are only found on national news, therefore would not be realistic if I included it in my local radio show would not reflect the realistic feel to my radio.
I mainly included vox pops in my stories, considering i did a local radio show means that the listeners are most likely members of the public, therefore including interviews from the public gives the show an approachable and interesting aspect. Mainly in my vox pops I had the correspondent recording an interview with the public on the street, this means i have to make it sound although they are really in the environment where they are meant to be. This is done by converting the sound from stereo to mono, the sound was equalised to replicate the sound of a correspondents microphone.
In my first news story I did a story on the death of a celebrity, it included vox pops of two fans of which were interviewed outside the hotel where the celebrity was found. To enable the vox pop to sound realistic i included real life sound effects of cars, cameras snapping and chatter. This meant that when listeners hear the vox pops they get the feel that the fans are on the street.
The vox pops that i used in my second story that was about the historical artefact being found i included the sound of machinery, and for the first recording of the mum with the baby i put sound effects of the baby crying.
The third story is similar to the others in terms of it being recorded on the street, the sound effects that were appropriate for this would be sirens and camera snapping, this gives the feel of an accident to to listeners.
In this advert I also had a mother speaking over the phone to the radio, this would be called a sound bite
In my fourth story where the nutritionist was recording in a primary school meant that I had to ensure i included the sound of children laughing and chatting in the background.

Evaluation- Using Conventions of Real Media Texts- Jingle
Whilst doing my research of radio, I found that all radio shows included a catchy jingle. Depending on the type of radio it is effects the sound of the jingle. Jingles being a vital part of radio, I felt that it was necessary to include a jingle. The jingles are played frequently throughout the show, there can be various jingles for different parts of the radio for example for the news, travel updates and adverts all use different jingle, they will be a similar beat but a different tempo. News jingles tend to be more serious than the show jingle.
Station Jingle:
News Jingle:
My jingle uses a catchy song, with a voiceover introducing the jingle. Having a catchy jingle is very important when creating a radio show, it tells the audience what show is being played and introduces the show. Considering radio moves quickly, it is sometimes hard for audiences to keep up, therefore using a jingle is a quick and easy way for the audience to become familiarised with what is going on. Jingles communicates to the audience through a catchy melody, a lot of the time the audience will remember the jingle throughout the day.

Evaluation- The Ways in which my Media Product Uses Conventions of Media Texts
All radio shows consist of jingles, news, weather, adverts and music. For this next post i will be discussing why and how I used the adverts that I chose in my media product. Adverts are essential for radio shows, it is how they make the majority of their revenue. By selling airtime to businesses or services providers means that the radio station advertising their products get paid. The length of advertisement changes depending on the amount of airtime brought. This is the reason why including adverts is a vital convention when producing a radio show. As annoying and boring adverts may be for listeners it is a key factor and is beneficial to listeners and the media companies.
Adverts vary between ones that include a narrative and ones that do not. This changes the feel of an advert and is dependent upon what the companies of the advert want to be heard over the radio. The length of the advert often depends upon what is being advertised, some adverts will just outline the product and does not include any narrative. The target audience of the radio effects what type of adverts and aired, products that appeal to the listeners are the ones that are played over the radio. For example when targeting a group of middle aged women the radio station may chose to play an advert for clothing, food or make up, where as if they were targeting middle-aged males they will play car adverts.
My radio was targeting middle aged women, therefore I chose to base my adverts on a food shopping company that I invented called 'save-cost' and a safe driving awareness advert, both my adverts were long and included lots of narrative.
Save-Cost advert:
In this advert I attempted to make it quite comical and funny in terms of playing on the idea of domestic homes and how they work. Christmas being a time of cooking and present giving means that people are very busy. The sound effects I recorded allowed the advert to seem as if we were listening in on somebodies house, will all the sound effects i used. By using diegetic sound that implies that the listeners are hearing what the voices hear on the radio really makes it sound authentic.

Car Safety Awareness Advert:
This advert provided a more serious approach, even though my radio targets women and this voice uses males still implies the idea of safe driving, as this could be someones husband. The sound effects that I used were skidding noises to give the impression of a car accident along with sirens and a crash noise. I also have a dramatic voice over of the man who supposedly had the accident means that the audience can try to imagine what he experienced. At the end of the radio the sound of cell doors closing implies he is in prison, this ends the advert on a memorable, tense conclusion.

Adverts I have Listened to
I again used the previous website in order to listen to more adverts that have been broadcasted over the radio. By listening to a range of different adverts enabled me to expand my understanding of adverts and how to make mine sound authentic. It will also assist me when I write my script.
WEETABIX ADVERT
WEETABIX ADVERT
- This sort of advert has a comical feel to it, the use of a little girls voice immediately draws in the attention of the audience. It also relates to the everyday lives of busy parents who may have younger children who are similar to the child in the advert. This is another good way of connecting with listeners. The end of the advert includes the voiceover, this gives a clear understanding of what the product is and where it is available.
- Adverts like this are a lot more dramatic than regular advertisements, they require a different approach, much like charity organisations that advertise over the radio, both of these evoke emotional responses and this is what makes them so successful.

Adverts
The adverts that I include on my radio will be targeted at attracting young to middle aged people, I am targeting a mixed audience. The idea that my radio station is local also contributes to the idea that I am targeting a wider audience. The adverts need to be appealing to the listeners, they must be able to relate and understand the advert that is being played.
I am now going to look at existing adverts and analyse how they appeal to an audience and whether they are effective on the radio:
1. Marks and Spencers
3. Selling old phones e.g. mazuma mobile:
I am now going to look at existing adverts and analyse how they appeal to an audience and whether they are effective on the radio:
1. Marks and Spencers
- When watching the advert it seems very appealing, it is clear that the product that they are advertising is food, the music implies christmas. Although this comes across clearly whilst being able to see it, if we could only listen to it all we would hear is music, this does not imply Marks and Spencer's in any way. Therefore this would not be a good advert to play over the radio
- When it comes to making my advert if I do a food supermarket, I must ensure that I create it so that the audience can understand what is going on and i must be clear on the product that i am advertising
2. Car advert:
- This is a good advert for the TV and the radio. The voiceover is distinct and makes it simple for the audience and listeners to understand what is going on. Although the setting of the advert is in space and is clearly fictional, it doesn't effect how the listeners are understanding the product.
- The message comes across quickly and clearly. I believe doing a car advert for my radio show would be good.
A good website that i used to research car adverts is this: CAR ADVERTS LINK
- It includes a range of different adverts previously shown on the radio. By listening to this i gained even more knowledge on what real life car adverts sound like and how they are presented to the audience.
- It also includes the scripts of what is said on the advert
3. Selling old phones e.g. mazuma mobile:
- This is a very good advert as the theme tune is catchy, just by listening to this advert we immediately are reminded of what it is selling. It may be extremely annoying by this is a way that the listers will continue to remember the company name.
- Although this is a TV advert it is another one that would be good to also have on the radio
4. Toothpaste
- Using an advert that includes people speaking from the public is a good way to connect with an audience. It gets the message of the product across to the listeners quickly and efficiently
- This sort of advert does not just have to be toothpaste, it can be any product that is used on a regular basis like for example mouth wash, body wash and hair products. However make-up is much harder to advertise over the radio, usually make-up adverts are a lot more dramatic and do not include reviews, they use models to reinforce how the make-up works by using lots of imagery and videos there fore a better way of advertising make-up would be on the television.

Capital- Radio Website
- Although the website is not so attractive compared to Kiss, it is still easy to use
- all the information is laid out clearly, it has got the listen again feature
- Capital FM targets a much larger audience compared to Kiss, this is a contribution as to why the website is not so colourful and interactive
- Being able to access a range of information is important when being on these websites.
- Showing the advert for the car is a way of sponsoring brands and this is again important for the audience to see.

Radio Websites
In the modern era we have technology that allows us to access the media when and wherever we are, this could be on our phones, tablets and laptops. Having a website for radio allows the audience to catchup what they've missed, read stories that they may have found interesting or even to look at photos. Many large, popular radio stations have got websites that are updated regularly.
For example Kiss FM:
When i typed 'kiss' into google this is the first thing that came up.
For example Kiss FM:
When i typed 'kiss' into google this is the first thing that came up.
- The website is easy to read and access, it clearly states the different areas and information i can receive just from clicking on one button
- The website is interactive and colourful, this is perfect for the type of audience that Kiss is trying to connect with. The website is very modern and aseptically pleasing to look at. There are bright colours and lots of images
- The listen again feature is one of the key things i believe that really entices the audience into listening, it makes it easy for the listener to hear what they have previously missed, or just being able to hear something they enjoyed or found interesting
- The celebrity gossip on the website is specifically targeting the younger generation. Sharing celebrity information is an attraction for listeners. Finding out what is going on in celebrities life is an activity that teenagers spend doing on a daily basis using Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Youtube. Having these media links makes it easy to connect and share to friends, this expands the targeted audience for the radio just by doing these simple things.

Audience
The type of radio station reflects the audience listening. There are certain conventions of radio that changes along with the type of audience that is listening. It is important for me to create my radio according to the type of audience that would be listening. This will effect the presenters tone of voice, jingles, adverts and even the prizes that are going to be won. Audience research is important as it indicated how many listeners are tuning into the radio show that is being played. The audience research is a form of market researching, it requires the audience to fill in questionnaires. A survey is also done, a question will be asked to the whole group and they all must answer it, the answers are then transferred onto a survey where the results are concluded.
The radio is altered and adjusted depending on the age, gender and general lifestyle of the audience i am targeting. To ensure that my radio is successful i must make sure that my audience is understanding what is going on throughout the duration of my radio show.

Ofcom
OFCOM is the communications regulator in the UK. They control TV, radio and video on demand, fixed line telecoms, mobiles, post, and airwaves over which wireless devices work. For me it is important to create the sense of a real radio show. The OFCOM service sheet has important information concerning audience, where the radio station targets in terms of location, the type of music that the radio station uses.

Running Order for my Radio
The running order is extremely important for the structure of the radio station. It is there in order to enable everyone to be clear on when everything is taking place, this isn't just to benefit the people who work at the radio station but it is also there in order for the listeners to keep up to date with what is going on. There is a routine to it, and it becomes a part of peoples everyday lives, from when they maybe on their way to work or just listening in the morning. A persons preferred radio show is i believe to do with the running order.
- Song
- News presenter 1 informing the audience who the artist of the song is, and the relative information about the song, news presenter 2 presenting the offers and what is coming up next
- Station jingle
- Advert 1
- Advert 2
- News Jingle
- News story 1

Radio Music and Jingles
I am now going to upload some tunes and jingles that are played on various radio stations, i will be looking at Magic, BBC radio 1 and Spoon radio (rock radio station that broadcasts in Switzerland):
- The tune seems to be a lot more dramatic and serious, there is still a catchy beat to it that is easily recognisable by the audience.
- Different tunes are used for parts of the radio show (e.g. the news, weather and general talk from within the studio), each of the tunes still follow the same conventions in terms of sound.
- The voice introducing what part of the radio is about to be played, is introduced at the beginning of the jingle
- Even though this radio is broadcasted from Geneva, Switzerland, i wanted to see if their conventions of radio shared any similarities with British radio stations.
- From listening to their jingles and radio music, i have found that they do in fact have many similarities, the catchy tune with the voice introducing the station
- It was interesting for me to hear this as even though it is a Rock station in Switzerland, you would not be able to tell the difference if it was played in Britain
- Magic is a well-known radio station broadcasting in the UK, the tune changes slightly for each different show e.g. the morning show. The voice of the radio station introduction stays the same in terms of the tune and the sound of it
- The music in the back ground is upbeat and happy, this to me resembles to the listeners that it is light and easy to listen to, when we compare this to BBC which is dramatic music, for me says that the BBC will be a lot more serious and may contain more news stories.
This is the website that i used in order to listen to a range of jingles.

I am now going to create a questionnaire regarding audience, i will look for their expectations from radio and news in terms of genre, choice of stories, listening habits and interests.

Jingles Introduction
Jingles are a large part of radio shows, they are used in order for the audience to identify what radio they are listening to, it is also important as the purpose of jingles is to be memorable for the listeners, a successful jingle will remain in the listeners mind. They keep things fresh and interesting. Jingles have a musical melody and they audience get more out of the catchy and sometimes annoying tune when to is played in the car. Another benefit of jingles is that they remind the listener what radio they are listening to, sometimes a voiceover will introduce the station and what type of music can be expected when listening to the the show. This will keep them tuned in.
In some way jingles give the radio an identity in the eyes of the audience. Jingles contain hook and meaning that promotes the radio. This is through a catchy tune.
What makes jingles so effective is that they are short and simple. A catchy tune is the most important part but also the most difficult, it must be memorable. I think having a positive feel is also a key point, the audience will feel happier and there fore more likely to remember the tune. These are all important ideas I must remember to include when it comes to creating my own jingle.

Jingles Played on the Radio
For this part of my blog I am going to be analysing different types of jingles from various radio stations. Jingles can be used to introduce the news, weather, sports and just general talk on the radio. The jingle promotes the person speaking or what is about to happen next, this keeps the audience up to date therefore making them able to understand what is happening:
Radio news jingle:
Traffic news jingles:
Radio news jingle:
- This is more of a serious and dramatic tone
- It is played in the background of the presenter reporting the news
- It includes other ways of listening to the news and the name of the radio show
- The jingle represents what is about to happen and keeps us updated
Weather jingle:
- It usually includes a mention of a product it is sponsored by e.g. 'weather sponsored by kleenex balsam tissues'
- In some stations they use the same jingle as the news
- Radio shows like BBC change the theme to a slightly more upbeat tune
Sports jingle:
- We can hear the audience in the background giving the feel of a stadium, this instantly relates the audience to sports
- The voice over is deep and engaging
- It is dramatic, but upbeat at the same time
- Traffic is usually played during rush hour, this could be the morning or evening
- The news station is repeated during the announcement of traffic
- Sometimes they do not call it a 'traffic announcement' they change the phrase to something more dramatic for example on capital it is called a 'travel update'
- Dramatic music is played in the background of the announcement and then fades into the next song playing in the background towards the end
Radio jingle:
- The music is catchy and memorable
- The name of the radio show is included and in some cases the frequency
- Also the location of the radio show
- If the radio is promoting products or is sponsored by a product then they mention it
- Some stations include information like more ways the news can be listened to for example 'on radio, online or on your mobile phone... this is capital'

The Way the News is Reported on Radio
I am going to start with BBC Radio 4 news, I will be analysing how the news is reported and what other ways that they elaborate on the story.
- The first thing that happens is that the radio show will do a small summary of one or two news stories.
- The theme music to the news is also played this is usually dramatic sound effect
- The presenter doing the news will always introduce the story and explain what has happened
- If they have an archive clip then they play it after they have explained the story, there may not even be an introduction to the clip, it is played straight after the story to back it up, it will usually finish it off
- On BBC radio 4, they speak extremely clearly with good language, their tone is calm
- When bringing in a correspondent they will introduce who they are speaking (name and where they are) to and then go to them
- Half way through telling the stories they have switched from a female presenter to a male presenter
Now I will be listening to Heart, to hear how they report the news.
- On this radio it is a man who reports the news, he speaks quickly and it is not as clear as BBC
- Not as many archive clips or correspondents are used, but when they are used there is no introduction to them, it just leads into it
- When they say something important he slows down when speaking

Radio Show Presenter
For this post I am going to look at a variety of different radio shows and see how there presenters record the news. I am doing this because when it comes to recording my radio show I want to make sure that i have an accurate presenter in terms of my target audience. The sort of things that I will be looking for are the tone of voice, the speed at which they speak, the vocabulary they use and what gender the presenter is.
Capital FM-
Capital FM-
- This is a national radio station, it targets quite a large audience between the aged of 14-34.
- They play the music that is most popular on the charts
- They target a modern young audience this means that the presenters have to speak with a simple, catchy tone of voice, maybe using modern slang to appeal to their audience
- whilst listening to a capital show I can hear that the presenters seem very friendly and speak a joyful tone, they also laugh a lot, the rest of the cast also laugh (there is a back ground noise of laughter).
- There is both a male and female presenter
- The presenters have 'banter', this attracts the younger audience
Smooth-
- Smooth radio show targets 25-45 year olds, the sort of music that they play is adult contemporary, this does not generally appeal to the younger audience
- The presenter is a man, he speaks slowly and clearly, using more sophisticated language.
- He speaks in a happy tone of voice when he talks.
- In some sentences he speak using old english slang like 'goodness gracious'
- There are not many sound effects used if we compare it to capital.

Comparing Local News- Magic (London) and Capital (Birmingham)
When i listened to both Magic (London) and Capital fm (Birmingham), I noticed that they both contained a few of the same stories but in a different order. Both radio stations had the story of 1.2 billions pounds going to the Syrian refugees in their first 2 stories, this is high up on the news bulletin. This story is not specifically related to Birmingham it is still a national story that most radio shows will announce.
Another story they both share is that Facebook is celebrating its 12th birthday. This story is in the last two of both radio stations news bulletins. This social network is used globally and most people would be interested in hearing about it.
The radio stations do not have anymore in common, they both have one more story on health, but it is not the same. They then go on to have one or two local stories that have happened in their region, for example Britain's got talent going to Birmingham because the first auditions are taking place there.
