News Values

News values are the factors of the news that help to explain how journalists and editors deeded that certain news stories and images that are accepted as newsworthy. They are also applied to in radio news bulletins and newspapers.
These are the definitions:
Immediacy: has the story happened recently? Often this will push the news story to the top of the bulletin

Familiarity: is it culturally or geographically close to us, this is important when it comes to the local news

Amplitude: is it a big event or one which involves large numbers of people, the more people involved means that the news story will be pushed to the top of the news bulletin

Frequency: how often the event happens, depending on the nature of the story frequency can push the story down the news bulletin (if the audience have become tired of hearing about this type of event), or it can also push the story to the top of the news bulletin if the audiences are outraged that the same thing keeps happening

Impact: can we identify with the story as having a profound effect on our own lives? does the story contain elements that would make us feel threatened, this is like amplitude a key news value pushes the story to the top of bulletin

Predictability: was this expected to happen

Surprise: is it an unusual or unexpected event?

Continuity: has this story already been defined as news? is it part of an ongoing to long running story? this has the effect of pushing the story down news bulletin

Conflict: does the story contain drama in describing disagreements, arguments, fights or battles between two or more people or organisations? this is the heart of most stories

Elite People: does the story concern well-known people? This is important for gossip which usually involves celebrities, musicians, sportsmen and politicians, this is also a key factor in tabloid newspapers.

Personalisation: is the story a human interest story? does this moves us emotionally?

Negativity: is it a bad news story? This will move up the news bulletin depending on how severe the story is.

Scandal: is the story likely to provoke moral outrage from parts of the audience? An example of this could be law authorities breaking the law, it can also involves money and people in charge not acting responsibly.

Balance: the story may be selected to balance other news, such as a human survival story to balance out with a news story containing death or tragedy. Positive news stories will balance out the bad news stories.

The 5W's

The 5 W's are an important parts of information that the readers, viewers and listeners are all expecting to find in a news story. The 5W's are used for structure and so that the information that is being shared is not missing any key information, this will also answer a number of questions that the audience may have about the news story. This is also so that the presenters can communicate with the audience in a correct and understanding way.
The 5W's are WHAT, WHEN, WHO, WHY AND WHERE

In the next part of my post I will be showing examples of the 5W's from a news post:
This is one of the news story that i will be using:

WHO

WHAT

WHEN

WHY

WHERE

Another example of a news story:
WHO

WHAT

WHEN

WHERE

WHY

By looking at these news stories it has shown me that the 5Ws are always shown very early in the news story, this has now enabled me to do the same thing when it comes to my news story.

Preliminary Task Conclusion

By the end of my preliminary task I had learnt many new techniques and seen how different technology works. For example I had to use a microphone to record my radio show, once I had recorded it I had to cut and edit different parts of the recording to make it sound more realistic. I also learned how to input different noises and sounds onto the radio show recording, this was done using sound cloud. By doing the preliminary task I was able to see how i could make my radio show seem as real as possible, I experimented with all different techniques and sounds in my preliminary task, and i now know what to include and what not to include for my radio show.

Pictures and information of the things that I have learnt:
  • this is an image of the software that i used to edit my recording, it is called adobe audition 1.5, it is very good at enabling me to cut out parts that i do not like, or do not sound good.
  • when I recorded it the microphone had a muzzle over the top of it, this is so that it does not pick up too many sounds around it, in real recording studios they use sound proofed rooms this is so that there is no echo and so that no surrounding noises are picked up, this gives the impression of the real radio show.

Preliminary Task- Potential Music And Sounds

Soon I will be recording my preliminary task, for this i will be gathering some different sound effects and music to make the recording sound as realistic as possible. I will need a sound effect and maybe some music for when my character falls off the stage and I will also need some music for my jingle at the beginning.
The music that I will need to use will have to be:

  • relatively old school music
  • need to sound like it comes from the 80s
  • I may have background noise when the presenter speaks- this is because the technology wouldn't have been as good, so their may be faults throughout the show

The sound effects from my archive clip will include:

  • the sound of the crowd cheering when the star comes on stage

  • a crash from when the star falls of stage

  • the sound of the crowd being in shock
  • I may have the sounds of an ambulance arriving in the back ground

The following are some sounds that I may use for my preliminary task, The final decision will be made when all of the clips are put together and I can hear them on the radio show:

Preliminary Task- Recording Draft

As part of my preliminary task I had to record for my radio show, I played the part of the female presenter, I do not particularly like the sound of my voice as the presenter, I now know not to use myself for my official radio show. I then have to find a male voice to play the parts of the star in my archive clip and the guest on the show.
This is the first recording I did before the editing and without the male voice.

It has been slightly edited to shorten the pauses that I had made whilst recording and also to remove out the parts where I made mistakes. I also had to made some parts of the recording quieter than others, this is because the echo of the back ground made the recording sound unrealistic.

Preliminary Task Script

For the Preliminary task i will be creating a five minute extract from an imaginary local radio show, this will include a jingle, a presenter introducing a guest, the guest responding and an archive clip featuring the guest.

The reason that i am doing the script is so that i can understand how the radio show works, and it will also allow me to understand how the equipment works. The preliminary task will enable me to learn about radio shows, this is because if i make mistakes in this task i can make sure that I do not do the same thing in my finished radio show.
The Script:
Tina: Hello, and you are back with me Tina on Retro time FM, Very soon we will be hearing from Max Hart also known as the greatest presenter on TV this year, in an exclusive interview, he recently visited a bon Jovi Concert in Mexico last month, he will be sharing his thoughts of the concert, and even more exciting Max will be interviewing Bon Jovi himself! we are so lucky to be hearing from him.

RetroTime FM 93.8 (the name of my radio station and the frequency)
Old school tunes, all day long (my slogan, which will also include some r&b soul sound)

Max: wow, i'm so excited to be here! I am a regular listener and I'm so hyped to finally be a guest on the show
Tina: Hi max, i think me and all my listeners would love to hear what you thought of Bon Jovi in Mexico last month! We also heard a rumour that you went back stage and met the legend of a man
Max: I would be happy to put all your minds to rest and i do admit that i did go back stage and was able to meet the man himself. He is a groovy guy and very cool, I have a recording of me interviewing him back stage! No body has heard this yet.....  would you like to be the first to hear it Tina?
Tina: I would be honoured to hear it max, thank you for sharing this special moment with us
(start of the archive clip)
Max Hart: Finally the time is here, the anticipation of finally getting to interview Bon Jovi has come, i am currently walking into the dressing room of Bon Jovi!
Bon Jovi: Max! My main man, hows it going?
Max Hart: great thanks, but I'm afraid to say I'm the one doing to interviewing, hows it going with you?!
Bon Jovi: oh yeah sorry Max, i just want to spread to love and say how much i love all my fans out there and when they hear this recording i want them all to know how much i appreciate them!

AS Media Production- Brief For Radio Station

For my AS media coursework I will be scripting, recording, and mixing a five minute extract from an imaginary local radio show which will include a news bulletin (with a jingle, outside broadcast, and voxpops), jingles, presenters and adverts.

Before i write my script i will have to research how news stories work and i will also need to listen to a number of radio stations, this is so that my extract sounds are as realistic as i can make them. But before all of this i must script my preliminary task, this will consist of a jingle, a presenter who will introduce a guest (and the guest must respond) and an archive clip that will also feature a guest.
