Other Conventions Of Radio New Bulletins

This post will show all the important conventions of a radio news bulletin-

AN INTRODUCTION-
This is where the main newsreader introduces himself to the audience. It usually includes a greeting and a time check.

JINGLE-
This is a short piece of music, it is very catchy and the audience should be able to identify it very easily.

VOX POP-
Members of the public commenting on the story. It could involve anywhere between 1-5 people, they all have different points of views

EXPERT GUESTS-
This could involve a celebrity or someone who is a professional in their field of work, it generally tends to relate to a story

OUTSIDE BROADCAST-
This tends to be a van that has all the radio equipment, by having this they are able to record stories at an event as it is about to happen.

SOUND BITE-
This is dialogue, from an outside person, it can be a celebrity or someone that has witnessed an accident or someone involved in the story. It can sometimes be a press conference.

CORRESPONDANT-
This is a person who works for the radio station, they will be recording live from an event that is the scene of a story.

ARCHIVE CLIP-
This could be a clip from someone who has passed away, it has been previously recorded and in the past.

Comparing News Bulletins- Absolute and Kiss

In my last post I listened to Absolute radio and Kiss FM radio. In this blog I will be comparing both radio to see if they share and similarities in terms of running order and news stories. The radio stations I listened to only had one story in common, this being the death of David Bowie.
Absolute radio plays the rock genre of music, they target an audience between the ages of 24-44 year olds. The type of stories that have been reported, in my opinion are targeting towards the older section of the targeted audience. The first story that is reported is about metropolitan police department, this is more understood and appreciated by the older listeners. The story about the river thames home owners, could only be related by a person who has a home, they can understand the effect of a house flooding has on the family who live there.

Kiss FM chose to use a story on the dangers of dating apps as their first story, this relates to their younger target audience as the younger generation is more likely to use dating app, by reporting this story they are warning the younger listeners about dating apps and how life threatening they can be. The last story is about mental illness is teenagers and how the government is doing more to help this cause. Most teenagers have a mental illness or know someone who does.

The only news story that both radio stations have in common is about the death of music legend David Bowie. I think that this is because they gave so much to the world in terms of music and entertainment that music radio stations have to leave everyone with a good memory of him. In Kiss FM one song was played for him, where as in Absolute they donated their whole day to playing songs by David Bowie, this is because their genre of music is rock and David Bowie is a rock legend.

Kiss FM- Radio Show at 6am

The first radio show i have chosen to listen too is Kiss FM morning show at 6am. I found out that the news is played every 30 mins, they target an audience of 15-24 year olds. Analysing News Bulletins On Radio Stations

In this part of my blog i will be focusing on how news is represented on radio stations, this will help me when it is time for me to make my radio station. It will allow me to see how real radio stations have incorporated news into their running order. Whilst listening i will also be able to see how the radio is structured with adverts, weather and other key things i must include in order for my radio show to sound authentic.
I am going to be listening to 2 radio stations that have broadcasted at the same time on the same day, by doing this i will be able to see the running order of the two radio stations and to see if they share any of the same stories and then i will be able compare their news structure. I will be comparing these radio stations because they are from completely different genre of radio and they target a completely different audience.
I am going to be using the tune in radio app, this allows me to play back and listen again to the radio show, on some websites they also have an option to listen again, but i prefer using the tune in radio app because it is much easier to find and listen to the radio show.

These are the two news stations that i will be covering for my blog.
KISS- It is a UK radio station which broadcasts on FM and a national DAB, it specialises in hip hop, R&B, urban and electronic dance music. Kiss targets a younger audience (15-24), it is an upbeat and cool radio station to listen too.

ABSOLUTE RADIO- This is another UK based radio show, it plays popular rock music, it is played across the UK. They target 24-44 year olds, they have a much larger target audience compared to kiss.
